New IES Practice Guide: Improving Adolescent Literacy This Institute for Education Sciences practice guide, Improving Adolescent Literacy: Effective Classroom and Intervention Practices, provides five specific recommendations to improve literacy among adolescents in the upper elementary, middle, and high school grades. Designed for teachers and other personnel who have direct contact with students, the guide presents strategies that have the strongest research support and are appropriate for use with adolescents. The Institute for Education Sciences five recommendations are: 1. Provide explicit vocabulary instruction 2. Provide direct and explicit comprehension strategy instruction 3. Provide opportunities for extended discussion of text meaning and interpretation 4. Increase student motivation and engagement in literacy learning 5.
