FREE Offers New Learning Resources

The Federal Resources for Educational Excellence (FREE) Web site is among the federal government’s most popular education Web sites because it offers one-stop access to free learning resources, including teaching ideas, learning activities, photos, maps, and more — on thousands of topics. New resources in subjects such as arts, history, language arts, and science are added to FREE each month.

More than 30 federal agencies formed a working group in 1997 in order to make federally supported teaching and learning resources easier to find. The resulting Web site is constantly updated with new resources developed by such federal agencies and organizations as the Library of Congress, NASA, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science Foundation, and the Smithsonian Institution.

Users can search for resources by using the search function, browsing through the newest additions, or browsing by the following topic areas:
  • Arts
  • Educational technology
  • Foreign languages
  • Health and safety
  • Language arts
  • Mathematics
  • Physical education
  • Science
  • Social studies
  • Vocational education
