This article provides an overview of scientifically based research and asserts that learning how to assess the validity of education research is critical for school reform. The author describes how to judge the validity of education research. The article provides definitions for many terms related to education research including: control groups, randomized and matched experiments, sample size, pre-post studies, research reviews, and statistical and educational significance. The article also explains the difference between scientifically based and rigorously evaluated, along with what is acceptable under the No Child Left Behind legislation. The author concludes with his opinion about how scientifically based research will impact schools.
