Abstract (written by WestEd)

This 60-page booklet clearly describes the need for low-performing schools to set high standards and then work on developing the culture and capacity to support change. The role of school environment, professional development, building leadership and ownership, using performance data, and stimulating innovation and change are some of the topics discussed. The book concludes with a checklist for improvement, suggestions, and examples of programs to support reform efforts.
