This article profiles a high school where 85 percent of its 1,700 students are poor, 98 percent are Hispanic, and yet more than 60 percent go on to college. Comments from students and teachers at Simon Rivera High School reveal that this high level of achievement is possible through caring, common sense, and using methods that capture kids' attention. For example, a history teacher has his students compute the hourly wage necessary to match a given annual household budget, which helps students quickly learn they need a college education to earn enough to provide a comfortable life for a spouse and children.
