Abstract (written by WestEd)

This publication, based on research and professional consensus, first defines small learning communities (SLCs), which in its more generic use refers to all school redesign efforts intended to create smaller, more learning-centered units of organization, including small schools and career academies. Then it provides a seven-step continuous improvement cyclical plan to follow and identifies five integral domains of research-based small learning communities:

  • Interdisciplinary teaching and learning teams
  • Rigorous, relevant curriculum and instruction
  • Inclusive programs and practices
  • SLC-based continuous program improvement
  • Building support for small learning communities
For each domain, the guide presents a best practices checklist, summary and detailed explanations of why they are essential, and tools for continuous improvement.
