Abstract (written by WestEd)
To address children's persistent challenging behavior, this article advocates using the following process:
- Prioritize and define the challenging behavior using kinesthetic language.
- Conduct an assessment through observation and interviews.
- Develop hypothesis statements that describe the antecedents, the behavior, and the presumed function the behavior serves.
- Develop comprehensive and individualized support plans aimed at eliminating the problem behavior.
- Implement, evaluate, and modify the plan as needed.
