To address children's persistent challenging behavior, this article advocates using the following process:

  1. Prioritize and define the challenging behavior using kinesthetic language.

  2. Conduct an assessment through observation and interviews.

  3. Develop hypothesis statements that describe the antecedents, the behavior, and the presumed function the behavior serves.

  4. Develop comprehensive and individualized support plans aimed at eliminating the problem behavior.

  5. Implement, evaluate, and modify the plan as needed.
The article maintains that this approach "results in more successful outcomes than other approaches to behavior intervention [and] holds promise for long-term resolution of challenging behavior."
