Abstract (written by WestEd)

The Milestones for Improving Learning and Education (MILE) Guide for 21st Century Skills is designed to help states, districts, and schools measure the progress of their schools in defining, teaching, and assessing 21st century skills. It is also designed to help stakeholders set benchmarks and goals, apply for grants, determine funding priorities, and create assessment tools.

After listing nine steps to build momentum to 21st century skills, the guide provides the student learning (the six elements of 21st century learning), curricular, and school leadership and management benchmarks that need to be met for students to attain 21st century skills.

The six elements of 21st century learning are:

  • Emphasize core subjects
  • Emphasize learning skills
  • Use 21st century tools to develop learning skills
  • Teach and learn in a 21st century context
  • Teach and learn new 21st century content
  • Use 21st century assessments that measure core subjects and 21st century skills.

R&D Alert® Vol. 8, No. 2

Under the federal No Child Left Behind act and numerous state initiatives, the number of schools and districts identified as low-performing has grown enormously, often outpacing efforts to address their needs. This issue of R&D Alert describes resources, strategies, and research findings that offer promise for making a difference in these academically troubled schools and districts.
