Abstract (written by WestEd)

This article broadly describes what data warehousing is, why it is important, and how it is currently done. It provides the following tips for districts on how to implement data warehousing successfully:

  • Determine what data your school already collects.
  • Determine what additional data your school needs.
  • Determine if you need to replace any existing databases.
  • Thoroughly research any software publishers and vendors. Confirm with the Schools Interoperability Framework consortium that the company is indeed a member.
  • Evaluate data-warehousing products and providers.
  • Determine what products should cost before you begin negotiating.
  • Make sure adequate training is covered in your plan.
  • Understand the impact of the freedom of information legislation (FOIL) on data analysis.
