Early Head Start: Providing a Quality Comprehensive Program for Infants, Toddlers and Their Families, Parts I & II

The Office of Head Start will soon issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the expansion of Early Head Start throughout the nation, using the additional funding available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. In this series, Pamm Shaw, Executive Director of the Berkeley-Albany YMCA Early Childhood Services Branch; Kay Wernert, Director of Marin Head Start; and Cheryl Williams-Jackson, Instructor in the Child Development Department, Modesto Junior College; will assist Head Start/Early Head Start grantees, school districts, and community based organizations in thinking about their capacity to effectively serve infants and toddlers.

Chavez High School in rural Delano, California, which serves a high poverty, high minority student population, performs well above its peers and has received a "similar schools ranking" of 8 (on a 10-point scale) on the California Academic Performance Index (API).


Word Generation: Using Online Tools To Support Effective Implementation of an Academic Language Program (SERP Institute)

SERP-Boston Research Director Catherine Snow, Professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, will provide an overview of Word Generation, a program for students in the middle grades that uses research-based principles for teaching vocabulary and designing instructional units focusing on all-purpose academic words. The program and many supporting professional development materials are freely available online.
